DonateVolunteer roles
If you have a hobby or interest with a historical bent — miniature railroading, fiber arts, woodworking, re-enacting or demonstrating — we would love your help; we are looking to expand our demonstrations and educational activities. And if you just want to lend a hand, there is always one needed.
- DocentGuide visitors through the museum, or lead walking tours around the National Historic Landmark district. Training is provided on the collections, the buildings and the history.
- CollectionsHelp maintain and clean displays, catalog artifacts, organize and label new items.
- Events committeeEvents are Historic Harmony's bread and butter. Plan, prepare and run the Christmas Market, Quilt-in-a-Day, garden programs, music events, the Antique Gun Show and the Silvester New Year's celebration.
- Activity volunteersFrom serving bratwurst to helping with children's crafts to operating the miniature train displays — lending a hand wherever it is needed on the day.
- Museum quiltersMeet Tuesday mornings, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The group hand-quilts a raffle quilt for the museum each year, takes on projects for others, and demonstrates at the Weihnachtsmarkt in November. Any hand quilter is welcome.
- Student internshipsAvailable through various colleges and universities: data entry, website maintenance, collections work, docent training and more. A real addition to a résumé or a college application.
- Buildings and groundsNine properties, most of them older than the county. Gardens, cemeteries and buildings all need looking after.
- Administrative helpThe office runs on volunteers too — data entry, mailings, answering the phone.
How to start
Stop by the museum during open hours, call (724) 452-7341, or send a message and say what you'd like to do. We'll match your skills and interests with a program.
Photographers
We love that you love the museum's properties enough to use them with your clients — the barn, the Mennonite Meetinghouse and the gardens behind the museum shop are the favorites. Some properties are available for photography by appointment only, and we require insurance paperwork and a small fee. Call the office to set up your dates.
TODO: host the photographer permission form (2023 PDF, currently on the old host) and link it here.
