A volunteer-run museum, organized in 1943
We are Historic Harmony, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization. We own and preserve nine properties — seven historic buildings, the Harmony Society Cemetery and the Mennonite Meetinghouse Cemetery — and through projects, activities and concerts we showcase the German culture of the settlers who came here more than 200 years ago. Our heritage crafts and music events draw some 25,000 visitors a year.
Our mission
- To preserve and promote knowledge of the Harmony area's history and heritage through museum collections and outreach activities.
- To foster tourism in southwestern Butler County.
- To encourage preservation of historical resources in support of educational quality of life, economic development and associated community objectives.
- To support students of history and museum management through internships.
- To encourage other property owners to preserve and beautify their historic buildings through our Heritage Awards Program.
What we do
Restoration
Seven of our buildings are more than 200 years old, and restoring them never ends. The most recent project replaced more than 40 windows in the 1812 Wagner/Bentel Haus, at a cost of $150,000.
Preservation
We accept donations of artifacts important to the history of Harmony and the surrounding region — many are on display in the museum — and we collect the memories and stories that bring local history to life.
Education
Through events, classes, guided tours, the walking tour, the Weavers Cabin and our archives, we share the town's history with anyone who wants it.
Board of directors
Four officers and six non-officer directors. Officers are elected by the membership every two years; directors every three years, with two seats expiring each year.
